Kosice city guide

Kosice is the second largest city of Slovakia in the eastern part of the country, close to the border with Hungary. It is located on the banks of the Hornád River and surrounded by mountains. Although the local economy of Kosice relied always very much on its heavy industry, the city is remarkable pretty and charming. Kosice has a well-preserved historical centre and the main attractions can be found around the central square and the city’s main street Hlavna Ulica.
 
Kosice’s epicentre for visitors is the St. Elisabeth Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in Slovakia. Other tourists attractions in Kosice are the St. Michael Chapel, the St. Urban Tower and the Neo-baroque State Theatre, home to opera and ballet. Noteworthy are also the remains of the city’s fortification like the Executioner's Bastion and the Mill Bastion. Other monuments of great cultural interest are the old Town Hall, the Old University, the Captain's Palace and Liberation Square. Especially during the warn summer season the atmosphere in Kosice can be very pleasant and vibrant due to the wide selection of open air restaurants and cafés, all within walking distance from the main square.
